Spotlight on Literacy #3 - Be a Word Collector

Having a great vocabulary is the first step toward being a great reader and person of literacy.  Two books that inspire the collection of words and the building of vocabulary include these two titles:

Peter H. Reynolds's The Word Collector  (Orchard/Scholastic, 2018)  and Roni Schotter's The Boy Who Loved Words (Schwartz & Wade, 2006).

You too can be a word collector.  Find 26 pieces of notebook paper and make a page for each letter of the alphabet.  (See example below).  Staple the pages together or tie them together with a piece of ribbon or string.  Or if you have a folder with paper fasteners in it you can put the pages (in order) in the folder.

Then each day spend five to 10 minutes finding words that would go on each page.  Write neatly.  After a week or two (or more) you will have your own collection of words.  

You can draw or paste pictures on the pages if you wish.

Note for those helping young scholars.  This activity can be a simple word collection activity - spelling and gathering words that begin with the beginning letter.  Older learners can create a more specialized book of words - animal words, words that have three syllables, words I'd like to use in a poem, funny words, or author names, or names.  The choice can be wide open depending on the learner's interest.
Or instead of alphabetical words create a "kindness" page - what are words you can use to show kindness to someone else; "friendship" page, and so forth.
